EMERGENCY SITUATIONS REQUIRING IMMEDIATE HOSPITAL VISIT

Sudden hearing loss (SHL) – is an unexplained loss of hearing all at once or over a few days.

  • Usually affects only one ear.
  • Often discovered upon waking up in the morning or using a phone.
  • The degree of hearing loss varies (moderate to severe).
  • Some notice a loud “pop” just before their hearing is gone.
  • A gradual decline throughout the day.
  • May often have other symptoms: ear fullness, dizziness, and/or tinnitus.
  • It can happen to everyone but usually starts between young and middle-aged adulthood.
  • If it’s happened to you, you are in a medical emergency!!! The delay increases the risk of permanent hearing loss. You have a small time window to get the medical treatment that can save your hearing. SHL is treated with corticosteroids over a 2-3 week period by drugs orally or via an injection through the eardrum.

Do you think it is caused by allergies, a sinus infection or earwax plugging? Test yourself by making a humming sound.

    • If you hear yourself talking louder in the deaf ear, it may indicate a blockage from cold or built-up ear wax.
    • If your voice is louder in the opposite (normal) ear, you may need medical attention.

There are a lot of theories, but no clear answer to what causes the sudden hearing loss. Receiving timely treatment greatly increases the chance of recovering at least some of your hearing.

  • Statistic: 17 cases/100, 000 of the population, 1:1.35 male to female ratio.
